Non- Hunting Guest Information
Royal Deeside Roe Buck Hunt
I am so glad that you are considering joining us on our Royal Deeside Estate roe deer hunt in Scotland! My daily challenge is to make sure that we have as much fun during the day touring castles, visiting historical sites, and shopping, as the folks who are in the field.
This information will give you an insight into what to expect on our touring days. Your trip includes the roundtrip airfare into Edinburgh from your nearest international airport. Typically, the flights leave the US in the afternoon, or early evening, you fly through the night, and arrive in Edinburgh the next
morning. We strongly suggest that our guests fly in a day early and stay at the Edinburgh Airport Hilton Hotel (which we will be happy arrange for you) in order for you to have some time to rest up. More importantly, with the instability of the airlines, this insures you will be in Edinburgh with your luggage ready for your transfer to the Glen Lui Hotel in Ballater.
On the day that we pick you up, the drive from Edinburgh to Ballater takes about 2 hours. You will have time to get into your room or lodge, and unpack that afternoon. There are a lot of walking trails around the grounds, and town is very close to where we stay if you want to do some exploring downtown. When you check in at the hotel, the front desk will let you know what time we will meet for dinner in the dining area. After dinner, Michael will conduct an orientation meeting so you will know what to expect while you are with us.
We like to get a fairly early start for the touring, so we will plan on meeting for breakfast at 8:00, and depart at 8:30 for a full day of touring historical sights and castles, as well as shopping. We have our own vehicle and driver, which gives me the flexibility necessary to make sure that each group sees the sights that they are most interested in. I am traveling with the group every day, making sure that everything is running smoothly. Admissions to all sites and lunch are provided as part of the non-hunting package. We like to be back around 5:00 in order to have dinner with the hunters at 5:30 or 6: before they leave for their evening hunt.
Over the many years that I have been doing this, I have put together itineraries including enjoyable places to visit in this area of Scotland during your three days of touring.
Here are some examples of those itineraries.
Pitlochary/Blair Castle Day:
We travel to Pitlochry, home of the famous “Heather Gems Factory” where local craftsmen make jewelry out of heather. We will visit Blair Castle, which showcases a spectacular display of arms and armor, as well as Bruar Falls, the House of Bruar, and shop at some of the best stores for Scottish gifts in Pitlochary.
Balmoral Estate Day:
On this day we visit the grounds of Balmoral Estate. We will visit the Queen’s Gardens, the castle, walk to John Brown’s statue, and tour the Royal Lochnagar Distillery. From there we will walk across a suspension bridge, through the estate cemetery, and visit the Crathie Kirk, the church the Queen attends when she is at Balmoral, and possibly sneak a peak at Birkhall, Prince Charles’ and Camillas’ private residence. This is the day we set up for pony riding and golf if you are interested. If time allows on this day, we will also visit Queen Victoria’s summer cottage on the banks of Loch Muick.
Glamis Castle and Dunottar Castle Day:
On this day, we travel to Dunottar Castle on the North Sea, a dramatic ruined cliff top fortress in a truly stunning setting. Then we travel on to Glamis Castle and tour the childhood home of the Queen Mother and the birthplace of Princess Margaret . We will also have lunch at the castle and enjoy some famous Forfar Bridies.
I hope this gives you an idea of what to expect on this dream trip to Scotland.
